For Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) student Brad Mullet, part of Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s legacy means volunteerism. (Check out photos of MLK Day<\/a>!)<\/p>\n

Mullet, a 19-year-old sophomore from Berlin, Ohio, joined fellow students Monday afternoon helping to clean up Blacks Run in Harrisonburg.<\/p>\n

The volunteer project was one of more than a dozen events organized by EMU to honor the late civil rights leader on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole day is really booked,\u201d said Mullet, a biology major. \u201cI think EMU has done a good job promoting what he promoted in his speeches: service.\u201d<\/p>\n

The centerpiece of the university\u2019s festivities was a chapel service, led by Christian author and peace activist Shane Claiborne.<\/p>\n

During his speech in Lehman Auditorium, he acknowledged that much has been done to promote King\u2019s message of equality and nonviolence worldwide.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful thing to celebrate \u2026\u00a0 but we have a long way to go,\u201d said the 37-year-old Kensington, Pa., resident.<\/p>\n

Claiborne challenged those in attendance to take time to act when they see injustice or someone in need. Often, he said, people are too wrapped up in their busy schedules.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, Claiborne said, we have to ignore our schedules and answer the call to action.<\/p>\n

\u201cAllow space for interruption,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Before ending the service, he played a recording his friend made of Iraqi youths singing \u201cWe Shall Overcome\u201d in Arabic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely magical,\u201d he said. \u201cWe pray that we shall overcome one day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout the day, the university hosted a variety of events, including the reading of King\u2019s \u201cletter from Birmingham Jail,\u201d and service projects.<\/p>\n

While the campus has celebrated MLK Day in the past, Brian Burkholder, campus pastor, said this year the university expanded its efforts to help build relationships with the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cMartin Luther King\u2019s legacy connects deeply with the values, mission and vision of EMU \u2026\u00a0 the call for justice \u2026\u00a0 for peace building,\u201d Burkholder said.<\/p>\n
