{"id":15598,"date":"2013-01-14T10:34:01","date_gmt":"2013-01-14T15:34:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=15598"},"modified":"2013-01-16T10:39:21","modified_gmt":"2013-01-16T15:39:21","slug":"defense-leads-women-to-rout-of-fellow-odac-leading-hornets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2013\/defense-leads-women-to-rout-of-fellow-odac-leading-hornets\/","title":{"rendered":"Defense Leads Women To Rout Of Fellow ODAC-Leading Hornets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four teams entered the day tied atop the ODAC women&#8217;s basketball standings at 4-1, but at least one would fall on Saturday.\u00a0 Eastern Mennonite made sure it would not be them, as they topped fellow ODAC-leader Lynchburg 68-53 on the road.<\/p>\n<p>After a tight start to the game, the Royals blew open a big lead.\u00a0 The women used a 12-5 run to build up a 27-18 cushion.\u00a0 Then after a Hornet bucket, EMU turned on the defense, forcing four turnovers and a missed shot.\u00a0 In less than two minutes, the Royals scored nine unanswered points to explode the lead to 36-20.<\/p>\n<p>Lynchburg surged over the final minutes of the half to get within 38-31 at the break, but the women gained momentum right back at the start of the second.\u00a0 EMU got an offensive put-back from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emuroyals.com\/sports\/wbkb\/2012-13\/bios\/ygarza%20bianca%20d2gm\">Bianca Ygarza<\/a><\/strong> (Conestoga, PA\/Penn Manor) to open the frame, then back-to-back steals and layups from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emuroyals.com\/sports\/wbkb\/2012-13\/bios\/brown%20alisa%201lxg\">Alisa Brown<\/a><\/strong> (Dumfries, VA\/Forest Park) and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emuroyals.com\/sports\/wbkb\/2012-13\/bios\/baltimore%20keyla%207z39\">Keyla Baltimore<\/a><\/strong> (Bristow, VA\/Brentsville District) to push the lead into double figures.<\/p>\n<p>The Royals dominated the second half, and pushed the lead up to 21 points when <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emuroyals.com\/sports\/wbkb\/2012-13\/bios\/patterson%20raiven%2067zp\">Raiven Patterson<\/a><\/strong> (Pulaski, VA\/Pulaski County) made the score 61-40 with an offensive put-back with 7:59 to go.\u00a0 It was coasting from there, as EMU&#8217;s defense won the day.<\/p>\n<p>The women forced a whopping 27 turnovers and had a 56% to 41% advantage in shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Seven players scored between seven and twelve points in a balanced attack for EMU.\u00a0 Ygarza had 12 counters, five rebounds and four assists.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emuroyals.com\/sports\/wbkb\/2012-13\/bios\/sykes%20shakeerah%20n33q\">Shakeerah Sykes<\/a><\/strong> (Dumfries, VA\/Forest Park) also scored 12.<\/p>\n<p>Baltimore finished with 11 points and three steals, while Brown added nine tallies and four steals.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emuroyals.com\/sports\/wbkb\/2012-13\/bios\/yoders%20kala%20d36n\">Kala Yoders<\/a><\/strong> (Myerstown, PA\/Eastern Lebanon County) also had four picks.<\/p>\n<p>Now 9-5 overall and 5-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, EMU stays in a first-place tie with Guilford and Bridgewater.\u00a0 The Royals play on the road Tuesday, travelling to Ashland to take on Randolph-Macon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four teams entered the day tied atop the ODAC women&#8217;s basketball standings at 4-1, but at least one would fall on Saturday.\u00a0 Eastern Mennonite made sure it would not be <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2013\/defense-leads-women-to-rout-of-fellow-odac-leading-hornets\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"more-link\">... read more <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">about Defense Leads Women To Rout Of Fellow ODAC-Leading Hornets<\/span><\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"author":112,"featured_media":15599,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4516,5173],"tags":[14095,13934,13628,14073,11672,14022,14074],"feature":[],"class_list":["post-15598","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-athletics","category-womens-basketball","tag-alisa-brown","tag-bianca-ygarza","tag-kala-yoders","tag-keyla-baltimore","tag-odac","tag-raiven-patterson","tag-shakeerah-sykes"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.6 -
