{"id":14687,"date":"2012-11-08T16:08:41","date_gmt":"2012-11-08T21:08:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=14687"},"modified":"2012-11-12T17:12:30","modified_gmt":"2012-11-12T22:12:30","slug":"musical-forces-combine-in-annual-gala-concert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2012\/musical-forces-combine-in-annual-gala-concert\/","title":{"rendered":"Musical Forces Combine in Annual Gala Concert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The annual celebration of the winter holiday season happens on Nov. 10, at 7 p.m., as the EMU music program presents its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/events\/detail.php?id=17363\">annual gala concert<\/a> in Lehman Auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>For EMU students, the chance to perform in front of their peers and professors is something they &#8220;cherish.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14853\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14853\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2012\/11\/chamber-singers-music-gala.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14853\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2012\/11\/chamber-singers-music-gala.jpg\" alt=\"EMU Chamber Singers vocal ensemble\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14853\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The EMU Chamber Singers are just one of the ensembles that will perform at the gala concert.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;My professors have made my studies meaningful in the way that they have truly invested in me as a student,&#8221; said Kelley Schroder, a senior <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/music\/\">music education<\/a> major from Leesburg, Va.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They see my needs and work with me to help me grow as a musician and future educator.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Number of musical forces share the stage<\/h3>\n<p>The concert, to be conducted by longtime EMU music professor <a href=\"\/personnel\/people\/show\/nafzigkj?ssi=music\">Ken Nafziger<\/a>, will feature a number of student and community ensembles, including:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14858\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14858\" style=\"width: 100px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2012\/11\/ken-nafziger.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14858\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2012\/11\/ken-nafziger.jpg\" alt=\"EMU professor of music Ken J. Nafziger\" width=\"100\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14858\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Ken J. Nafziger will conduct the music gala concert.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Chamber Singers<\/li>\n<li>ChoirsWithoutBorders<\/li>\n<li>EMU Chamber Orchestra<\/li>\n<li>two piano trios (piano, violin, cello)<\/li>\n<li>several vocal soloists<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;This is the most combined effort of the music program. It&#8217;s special to have this many forces in one performance&#8230; in one place&#8221; says <a href=\"\/personnel\/people\/show\/jr582?ssi=music\">James Richardson<\/a>, acting chair of music at EMU. Richardson, who\u00a0teaches voice and conducts ChoirWithoutBorders, also coached one of the piano trios for Saturday&#8217;s event. He will perform as a soloist as well.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14855\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14855\" style=\"width: 100px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2012\/11\/james-richardson1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14855\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2012\/11\/james-richardson1.jpg\" alt=\"EMU assistant professor of music James Richardson\" width=\"100\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14855\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor James Richardson will perform as a vocal soloist Saturday evening.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The gala concert will feature pieces by Franz Joseph Haydn, 1732-1809, often referred to as the &#8220;Father of the Symphony&#8221; and considered one of the most prolific and prominent composers of the Classical period.<\/p>\n<p>Student performances will include an array of Scottish songs (soprano, violin, cello and piano). The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/music\/ensemble\/\">EMU Chamber Orchestra<\/a> will perform symphony &#8220;No. 88.&#8221; The combined choirs, soloists and orchestras will perform &#8220;Mass No. 9 in D Minor, the Lord Nelson Mass.<\/p>\n<h3>Exciting performance opportunity for music majors and others<\/h3>\n<p>Schroder said she is looking forward to the music department coming together to celebrate the season.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We all come from different performing groups but for this one event we do every year we come together as one large group and make wonderful music,&#8221; said Schroder.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe Raber, a sophomore music and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/math\/math\/\">mathematics<\/a> major from Dalton, Ohio agreed, adding, &#8220;I am in both choir and orchestra this semester, so I have gotten to know both the choral and orchestral parts of the Haydn mass, and I am looking forward to hearing how they come together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Admission and more information<\/h3>\n<p>Admission to the concert is free, but a $10 donation is suggested to benefit the music department student scholarship fund.
