{"id":14368,"date":"2012-10-10T09:34:53","date_gmt":"2012-10-10T13:34:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=14368"},"modified":"2012-10-25T11:37:20","modified_gmt":"2012-10-25T15:37:20","slug":"community-flocks-to-emu-for-annual-fall-harvest-dinner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2012\/community-flocks-to-emu-for-annual-fall-harvest-dinner\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Flocks to EMU for Annual Fall Harvest Dinner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ranita Shenk\u2019s favorite part of the Fall Harvest dinner was squash picked straight out of one of Eastern Mennonite University\u2019s five campus gardens.<\/p>\n<p>The 20-year-old sophomore made sure she attended the annual Fall Harvest Local Meal last week, if only because many of her friends were raving about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of the most popular meals of the year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Students, faculty, staff and visitors line up to partake of the yearly celebration of everything local: produce, meat, herbs and even the music playing through the speakers \u2014 all produced no farther away than Waynesboro, and mostly in Harrisonburg or Rockingham County.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past five years, the meal has become a well-received tradition on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not really on a meal plan, but I make it a point to come,\u201d said senior James Souder, 22.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe always make sure we come,\u201d echoed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/ls543\">Lois Shank<\/a>, assistant to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/fk938\">Provost Fred Kniss<\/a>, who donated an array of peppers from his city garden.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/seasonsbountyfarm.com\/market-page\">Season\u2019s Bounty Farm in Harrisonburg<\/a> provided radishes and potatoes, cabbage came from Hickory Hill Farm in Keezletown and Showalter\u2019s Orchard and Greenhouse provided apple cider, to name a few of the event\u2019s farmer participants.<\/p>\n<p>Even the canola oil was local, derived from <a href=\"http:\/\/portwoodacres.blogspot.com\/\">Portwood Acres in Port Republic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe interest that the community gives us, it\u2019s what makes it worthwhile,\u201d said Ramona Lantz, serving and catering manager at the university, on a short break from practically running around the buzzing dining hall.<\/p>\n<p>Every month, the cafeteria provides a themed meal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is by far the most popular,\u201d Lantz said.<\/p>\n<p>The event was one of the first of the annual Food and Farming Week at EMU, put on by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/sustainability\/campus\/earthkeepers\/\">Earthkeepers<\/a>, a student group that aims to encourage and start environmentally friendly practices around campus.<\/p>\n<p>Students learned how to bake bread in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/studentlife\/residence-life\/options\/cedarwood\/\">Cedarwood<\/a> residence hall last week. They took a tour of Broadway farm Avalon Acres and various campus gardens.
