{"id":14279,"date":"2012-10-05T08:55:00","date_gmt":"2012-10-05T12:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=14279"},"modified":"2012-12-02T22:28:18","modified_gmt":"2012-12-03T03:28:18","slug":"haitians-embrace-trauma-resilience-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2012\/haitians-embrace-trauma-resilience-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Haitians Embrace Trauma-Resilience Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With a history of violence linked to colonization, intense poverty and vulnerable geographic location, Haiti has long suffered from natural disasters, social conflict, and other traumatic events.<\/p>\n<p>That is one reason more than 1,000 Haitians have welcomed trainings, materials and principles derived from Eastern Mennonite University\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/star\/\">STAR, which stands for Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe training has helped me understand the relationship between violence and trauma,\u201d says Reginald, a 26-year-old disabled Haitian man who attended STAR workshops this year in Port-au-Prince. \u201cMy dream is to share the trainings with all the disabled people in Haiti to help them overcome their own traumas and become resilient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Using STAR curriculum translated and contextualized for Haiti, project staff have taught basic trauma awareness and response skills to a core group that exceeds 1,000 volunteers, including Reginald, many of whom are now putting the concepts to work in their own communities.<\/p>\n<p>Enthusiasm for the trainings \u2013 sponsored by six Christian organizations including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcc.org\/\">Mennonite Central Committee (MCC)<\/a> \u2013 demonstrates the profound need for trauma work in Haiti, as well as STAR\u2019s relevance across cultures and contexts, say several people affiliated with the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is really a blessing. It is really amazing to have this kind of program in Haiti to contribute to the construction of human beings as well as the resilience of the Haitian people,\u201d says Garly Michel, the program coordinator with the STAR project in Haiti who is overseeing trainings throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p>The three-year project, now entering its final year, was launched in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake that killed 316,000 and left 1.5 million homeless, according to Haitian government statistics. Originally focused on the areas most affected by the earthquake, Michel says the project\u2019s scope soon expanded to include all 10 d\u00e9partements, or states, in Haiti.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d like to see a non-violent, healthy and resilient Haiti where each Haitian feels comfortable, safe and proud to live,\u201d says Harry Th\u00e9lusma, program officer with the STAR project in Haiti.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe curriculum works, and it works in so many contexts,\u201d says STAR director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/bargee\">Elaine Zook Barge<\/a>. \u201cFor me, that\u2019s just really affirming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>STAR founding director Carolyn Yoder says one reason STAR principles can be so widely applied is that they address basic, universal human responses and reactions to pain and hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Yoder, who now works part-time with STAR as its systems developer, joined Barge in Haiti in the early fall of 2012 where they trained 15 facilitators who will continue work with the larger group of STAR participants in the country. In the coming year, Michel says he and his colleagues plan to provide STAR training to at least 480 more people.<\/p>\n<p>Michel and Th\u00e9lusma, who are both alumni of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/spi\/\">EMU\u2019s Summer Peacebuilding Institute<\/a>, said their biggest wishes for the future are prayers for Haiti and continued financial support that will allow them to continue STAR trainings beyond the end of the initial three-year pilot program in September 2013.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With a history of violence linked to colonization, intense poverty and vulnerable geographic location, Haiti has long suffered from natural disasters, social conflict, and other traumatic events.
