{"id":13950,"date":"2012-09-07T10:54:21","date_gmt":"2012-09-07T14:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=13950"},"modified":"2012-09-27T10:48:38","modified_gmt":"2012-09-27T14:48:38","slug":"emu-alum-linking-kids-to-the-bay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2012\/emu-alum-linking-kids-to-the-bay\/","title":{"rendered":"EMU Alum Linking Kids to the Bay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Laura Cattell Noll, a 2009 Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) alum, is engaging students in restoration projects to build community awareness for the Chesapeake Bay.<\/p>\n<p>Cattell Noll, a conservation technician, works within the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.conservationfund.org\/chesapeake_bay_initiative\">Chesapeake Bay Initiative of the Conservation Department<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aqua.org\/\">National Aquarium in Baltimore<\/a>. Her work focuses on the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay watershed \u2013 specifically, implementing community-based wetland restoration projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe projects are \u2018community-based\u2019 because we engage volunteers from the local area in the actual planting of the sites,\u201d said Cattell Noll. \u201cThe idea is community members who help restore a wetland become invested in that site and want to protect it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Life after EMU<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After graduating with a degree in environmental science, Cattell Noll began working with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dnr.state.md.us\/mcc\/\">AmeriCorps in the Maryland Conservation Corps<\/a>, assisting with several National Aquarium projects. When her two-year commitment was finished, Cattell Noll started an internship at the aquarium, which eventually led to a full-time position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I talk to kids and other community members about environmental issues,\u00a0I try to\u00a0offer concrete steps that people can take in their everyday lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cattell Noll says she tries to not focus too much on \u201cdoom and gloom\u201d concepts because people will not be motivated to make changes. Instead, she takes lessons learned from her time at EMU and weaves them into her presentations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13953\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13953\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2012\/09\/emu-alum-linking-kids-to-the-bay\/olympus-digital-camera-7\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13953\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13953\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2012\/09\/033-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2012\/09\/033-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2012\/09\/033.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13953\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cattell Noll finds her most satisfying moments are when \u201cthe students become the teachers.\u201d Photo provided by the National Aquarium.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAt EMU I learned a lot about the day-to-day changes that I as an individual can make to improve our environment,\u201d said Cattell Noll, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/bible\/peace-oratorical-contest\/\">a bi-national winner of the 2009 C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest<\/a>. \u201cI regularly encourage students to learn about and try recycling, composting, gardening\u00a0and biking \u2013 ideas that I became intimately familiar with as a student.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>An outdoor classroom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cattell Noll works specifically with students from the Terrapins in the Classroom and the Wetland Nursery Programs. In both programs, students are involved from start-to-finish in the project, raising fish and\/or grasses in their schoolyard or feeding and measuring terrapins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe terrapin project is part of a larger research initiative to see if this &#8216;head start&#8217; year helps increase survival rates of the diamondback terrapin,\u201d said Cattell Noll.<\/p>\n<p>Cattell Noll said her team monitors the sites for months and sometimes years after the initial project is finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really rewarding when a student or community volunteer has an &#8216;aha&#8217; moment about the environment,\u201d said Cattell Noll. \u201cWe hope the act of giving back to their local ecosystem inspires a personal shift towards stewardship of the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not a typical job<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When Cattell Noll is not visiting classrooms or leading initiatives, she\u2019s involved in seasonal projects \u2013 planning for terrapin release and large-scale community restoration and plantings in upstate New York, Maryland\u2019s eastern shore and Virginia Beach, among others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no such thing as a \u2018routine\u2019 day for me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the manual labor and extensive work out of state can wear on anyone, Cattell Noll finds her most satisfying moments are when \u201cthe students become the teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we explained to\u00a0one\u00a0group of students\u00a0that rainwater washes trash into the storm drains and then into the Bay, they\u00a0were astounded,\u201d said Cattell Noll. \u201cA few months later, when we were planting grasses one student wondered aloud how all the trash got there. Before I could answer, all the kids were yelling, \u2018Don&#8217;t you remember?
