Mast named to Academic All-District Team

Eastern Mennonite University senior Michaela Mast (Broadway, Va./Eastern Mennonite) added one more honor to her historic first season, being voted to the Google Cloud District 5 Academic All-District Team, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

She is now eligible for CoSIDA’s Academic All-America voting.

Mast burst onto the scene this past fall in her first time running cross country, earning ODAC Rookie of the Year honors. She was also the ODAC Rookie of the Meet at the ODAC Championships as the highest-finishing rookie athlete. Mast did more than just finish above any other new runner, as she took second place at the meet and earned All-ODAC First Team honors. She finished 16th at Regionals, also garnering All-Region accolades. Mast continued into her first track & field season, and had the No. 5 time in the ODAC in the indoor 3000m.

Academically, the Yoder Scholar holds a 4.00 GPA, majoring in psychology with minors of neuroscience, music and honors. She was a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honoree this fall and studied in the Middle East in the spring of 2016 as part of EMU’s cross cultural study program. On campus, Mast is a member of Emulate, a select eight-member singing group, as well student groups Sustainable Food Initiative and Coalition for Climate Justice.

The criteria for the All-District program states that a player must be of sophomore academic standing, be a starter or important reserve and claim a GPA of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale. Eastern Mennonite is a member of District 5, which includes players from NCAA D-III institutions in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Mast, the ODAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s cross country, was one of four women from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference honored on the ten-woman team from District 5.
