The cost\nof an undergraduate or graduate degree is a significant financial investment,\nand it can be a very wise investment if that degree will launch you to your desired\ncareer and dream job. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Master\u2019s in Biomedicine and Health Care Management\nprograms at EMU decided to start the dialogue on this important conversation.\nWe invited a local financial planner to speak with our students about financial\nresponsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the highlights he shared with our students:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Our views about finances are strongly rooted in the\nexperiences we\u2019ve had in our families growing up.<\/li><li>It\u2019s smart to start thinking about money now\nand to make a plan.<\/li><li>The reality is that not many students know how\nto budget or currently live on a budget.<\/li><li>Work to set up a budget \u2013 there are online tools\nlike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crown.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/EstimatedBudgetW.pdf\">this\none<\/a> that can help you do just that.<\/li><li>Try using an \u201cenvelope system\u201d containing cash\n(especially if you\u2019re an impulsive spender) to spend on eating out and other\nfun expenses each month. Once that cash is gone for the month, it\u2019s gone.<\/li><li>Practice being different from others when it\ncomes to spending your money \u2013 if others are spending too much, it\u2019s ok for you\nto not be spending as much as them!<\/li><li>People\u2019s financial habits don\u2019t change for the\nbetter because they get older or make more money. You have to <em>choose<\/em> to change your financial habits\nnow. Don\u2019t bank on the fact that you will simply make more money one day.<\/li><li>What are your expectations for your time and\nyour life when you become a doctor, dentist, physician assistant, etc.? Should\nyou automatically get a nice car like the other people you work with? Should\nyou buy that expensive home before you\u2019re financially ready because others have\nexpensive homes? Think about these things now, and when you\u2019re done with your\nmedical training, focus on prioritizing paying back your loans first before you\nadopt a lifestyle you\u2019re bank account isn\u2019t ready for.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>He left our students with the final take-home message: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>You can be building healthy\nfinancial habits now that can have a significant impact on your future\nfinancial security. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Financial responsibility isn\u2019t a subject that\u2019s commonly discussed with or amongst students, and many students feel they haven\u2019t been given the proper tools or advice to save and spend their money wisely.
