{"id":785,"date":"2010-12-09T18:42:09","date_gmt":"2010-12-09T22:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/blog\/crosscultural\/?p=785"},"modified":"2010-12-09T18:42:09","modified_gmt":"2010-12-09T22:42:09","slug":"final-reports-from-spain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/intercultural\/2010\/12\/09\/final-reports-from-spain\/","title":{"rendered":"Final reports from Spain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"alignright\" title=\"Spain\/Morocco 2010-11\" href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/blog\/crosscultural\/photos\/album\/72157625563522976\/spainmorocco-2010-11.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5045\/5244916928_d9626e4312_m.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Spain\/Morocco 2010-11\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a>For the past three days, our group has been on a trip to Toledo.\u00a0 In Toledo, we were able to see remnants of its Roman, Visigothic, and Moorish past.\u00a0 Toledo was a city of immense intellectual knowledge when it was a part of the Islamic empire and continued to be when the Christians reconquered the city.\u00a0 In addition to this more positive look back into Spanish history, many of us discovered some of the more disturbing parts of Spain\u2019s past when we visited a museum about the torture devices used during the Inquisition.\u00a0 The items on display there made me wonder how someone could have used those horrifying instruments on another human being.\u00a0 Luckily, Toledo\u2019s winding cobblestone streets and Christmas lights helped comfort me as I tried to focus on happier things.<\/p>\n<p>Now that we are back in Montoro to finish our last week in Spain, the realization of how little time we have left here is finally hitting us.\u00a0 While the prospect of seeing our friends and family again is exciting, it\u2019s going to be sad to leave here.<\/p>\n<p>-Kate van der Zwaag<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"alignleft\" title=\"'Nagy' with his sword\" href=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5242\/5244933742_daf2a4d9c3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5242\/5244933742_daf2a4d9c3_m.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"'Nagy' with his sword\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a> It\u2019s amazing how when people say time goes so fast, I never believe it\u2019s true.\u00a0 And then I find myself in my last week of a 3\u00bd month cross cultural, and have to face the reality that it\u2019s over.<\/p>\n<p>This past week, as with most of the weeks on this trip, has been interesting.\u00a0 Group dynamics always prove to be a source of interest, and it\u2019s through our challenges with others in the group that help our relationships to mature.\u00a0 It\u2019s scary thinking that soon I will be interacting with others outside this group\u2014 people who used to be similar will now feel foreign and different, but I\u2019m hoping that feeling won\u2019t last long.<\/p>\n<p>Our past three days were spent in Toledo, which is an awesome town.\u00a0 They are world renowned for their sword making, and the better parts of my days there were spent with \u2018Nagy\u2019 and Ben talking about how sweet the swords are.\u00a0\u00a0 We also got to visit the torture museum there, and while being disturbing, it was also fascinating in the fact that people could have actually used these devices on someone.\u00a0 It\u2019s sad and sickening to see, but it\u2019s real and is still happening, even if it\u2019s not in the public eye.<\/p>\n<p>Coming back from Toledo, we got a shock when we heard there was a landslide in our town that caused a road to be out of use.\u00a0 There had been lots of rain, and the river rose considerably (as I depicted), and has certainly done some damage.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, an interesting week.\u00a0 There is excitement in the house for going home, but wanting to enjoy our last days to the fullest.
