{"id":3548,"date":"2018-03-19T11:54:29","date_gmt":"2018-03-19T15:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crosscultural\/?p=3548"},"modified":"2018-04-03T13:58:41","modified_gmt":"2018-04-03T17:58:41","slug":"kerala-sarang-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/intercultural\/2018\/03\/19\/kerala-sarang-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Kerala &amp; Sarang Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A day in the life at the Sarang Center, second person POV:<\/p>\n<p>6:15 am:\u00a0 First alarm<\/p>\n<p>6:20:\u00a0 Second alarm<\/p>\n<p>6:22: Get out of bed, throw Kalari clothes on<\/p>\n<p>6:31: Take Rickshaw to Kalari<\/p>\n<p>6:47: Arrive, lather oil on body, go through bowing routine<\/p>\n<p>7:01: Smile and grimace after Guru-ji starts class with \u201cThree laps!, one more, one more!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>8:30:\u00a0 leave class a bit more flexible and with the knowledge that you\u00a0<em>will\u00a0<\/em>be feeling this in muscles you didn\u2019t know you had<\/p>\n<p>8:45:\u00a0 Arrive back at the houses, gather breakfast, eat with your 9 housemates by sitting in a circle &#8211; on couches, on chairs, on the floor &#8211; &amp; talk about each other\u2019s mornings<\/p>\n<p>9:12:\u00a0 Take shower if your gracious housemates are able to fill the water tank<\/p>\n<p>10:00: Violin class!\u00a0 (I\u2019m a complete newbie&#8230; God bless our ears)<\/p>\n<p>12:00: nap time.<\/p>\n<p>1:30: lunch.\u00a0 Gather food, sit in circle, discuss the current snack situation.<\/p>\n<p>2:00-7:30: free time!\u00a0 Options include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>read<\/li>\n<li>class assignments<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/received_1742286689163019.jpeg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3550\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/received_1742286689163019-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/intercultural\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/received_1742286689163019-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/intercultural\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/received_1742286689163019-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/intercultural\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/received_1742286689163019.jpeg 1512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>practice violin<\/li>\n<li>provide for your family by braving the heat and head to town for snacksonsnackonsnacks<\/li>\n<li>play with children<\/li>\n<li>Journal<\/li>\n<li>Read<\/li>\n<li>Go for a run in a nearby village &amp; gain new running buddies, usually in the form of curious, lanky adolescents with wide smiles and \u201chello, where from?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Read<\/li>\n<li>Pass out invitations to neighbors for upcoming program that your group will be putting on<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>7:30: supper!\u00a0 Eat again with your house, discuss pressing topics such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is everybody okay with a no-pants rule?<\/li>\n<li>The restaurant situation in Harrisonburg &#8211; McDonald\u2019s or Cuban Burger? Quality or quantity?<\/li>\n<li>Youth group reminiscences, good and bad<\/li>\n<li>Who is going to eat the last popper?<\/li>\n<li>How is percussion going, Trevor?<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhy EMU needs a frisbee golf course\u201d &#8211; a persuasive speech by Trevor Oyer<\/li>\n<li>Spirit Animals<\/li>\n<li>State of the Snackage\u00a0 (not to be confused with State Of The Union)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>10ish: Set alarm, climb in to bed, and whisper an assuring \u201cyes, we can\u201d to your hamstrings in preparation for the next day of classes<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/28661051_548159978895156_8546447476897349632_n.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3551\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/28661051_548159978895156_8546447476897349632_n-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/intercultural\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/28661051_548159978895156_8546447476897349632_n-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/intercultural\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/28661051_548159978895156_8546447476897349632_n.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>On a more serious note:\u00a0 Our time at the Sarang Center was, for me, a much needed change of pace after our time in Goa.\u00a0 We lived in houses, interacted with neighbors, and experienced the unpredictability of life in India through tentative schedules and iffy water\/electricity availability.\u00a0 It was the first time our living space was truly \u201coff the grid\u201d with no internet\/TV within close proximity.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t rare for me to walk downstairs and see 5-7 people sitting in a circle, reading between classes, or walk outside and see other group members playing badminton or soccer with neighborhood friends.\u00a0 Some houses even went the extra mile, inviting neighbor kids over to paint, play games, and exchange words from respective languages.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/CEFC1E2E-8244-4CF0-95AE-B12192E985FD.jpeg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3553 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/CEFC1E2E-8244-4CF0-95AE-B12192E985FD-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/intercultural\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/CEFC1E2E-8244-4CF0-95AE-B12192E985FD-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/intercultural\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/CEFC1E2E-8244-4CF0-95AE-B12192E985FD-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/intercultural\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/CEFC1E2E-8244-4CF0-95AE-B12192E985FD-1024x683.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>We each got to pick two classes to take for two weeks.
