{"id":3542,"date":"2018-03-09T15:32:04","date_gmt":"2018-03-09T19:32:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crosscultural\/?p=3542"},"modified":"2018-04-09T10:45:11","modified_gmt":"2018-04-09T14:45:11","slug":"guatemala-poetry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/intercultural\/2018\/03\/09\/guatemala-poetry\/","title":{"rendered":"Guatemala: Poetry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hola m\u2019hija<br \/>\nAhorita llego<br \/>\nDe platicar con un ciego<br \/>\nPero voz fijo<br \/>\nSu coraz\u00f3n de fuego<\/p>\n<p>Perdi\u00f3 su visi\u00f3n<br \/>\nEn el a\u00f1o ochenta y siete<br \/>\nPor un accidente de cohete<br \/>\nCreando una fisi\u00f3n<br \/>\nEn ambos ojos y la mente<\/p>\n<p>Escuchame, me indicaba<br \/>\nEs el trig\u00e9simo primer a\u00f1o<br \/>\nDe vivir as\u00ed cotidiano<br \/>\nPero lo que me perjudica<br \/>\nNo es aquel da\u00f1o<\/p>\n<p>Lo que m\u00e1s me ha da\u00f1ado<br \/>\nEn estos treinta y un a\u00f1os<br \/>\nEs que cada ser humano<br \/>\nA quien he escuchado<br \/>\nLe toma la visi\u00f3n por sentado<\/p>\n<p>-Adam Moyer<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Dirt floor and hanging corn<br \/>\nLush carpet and ceiling fan<\/p>\n<p>Candle light and wood fire<br \/>\nFlipped switch and microwave<\/p>\n<p>Wooden bed and shared room<br \/>\nMattress pad and closed door<\/p>\n<p>Tortilla making and mountain climbing<br \/>\nEating out and five cars<\/p>\n<p>Eight siblings and roaming chickens<br \/>\nNuclear family and backyard<\/p>\n<p>Outhouse and outdoor spigot<br \/>\nFlushing toilets and hot water<\/p>\n<p>Playing catch and manual labor<br \/>\nToy room and studying science<\/p>\n<p>Worn clothing and no education<br \/>\nFull closet and college degree<\/p>\n<p>Below poverty and pure joy<br \/>\nMiddle class and \u2026<\/p>\n<p>-Madeline Mast<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Poems are freaking hard<br \/>\nHarder than living abroad<br \/>\nWe\u2019re already halfway done<br \/>\nTime flies when you\u2019re having fun<br \/>\nThere was AP, Douglas and Tucson<br \/>\nGuatemala City and Coban<br \/>\nAnd I almost forgot Atitlan<br \/>\nMy Spanish still sucks<br \/>\nBut who gives two ducks<br \/>\n(I write kid friendly poems)<br \/>\nI have experienced so many cultures<br \/>\nAnd seen the basurero with vultures<br \/>\nI have slept on planks of wood<br \/>\nAnd where people were massacred I have stood<br \/>\nThe people here have beautiful souls<br \/>\nThey\u2019ll keep giving you food when you\u2019re full<br \/>\nWhile they eat so little<br \/>\nAnd have so little<br \/>\nThe lucky ones have opportunity<br \/>\nAnd the rest live in poverty<br \/>\nYet they all wave and smile<br \/>\nWhile this gringo says \u201cbuenos\u201d and passes by<\/p>\n<p>-Lucas Miller<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/25687319717_82649666e6_z.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3544 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/25687319717_82649666e6_z-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/intercultural\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/25687319717_82649666e6_z-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/intercultural\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/03\/25687319717_82649666e6_z.jpg 479w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Where is the oxygen<br \/>\nNot in my lungs<br \/>\nMy throat burns<br \/>\nStraining my legs<br \/>\nMy back<br \/>\nMy whole being<br \/>\nThese children<br \/>\nWe would label them poor<br \/>\nAnd yet here<br \/>\nIn this context<br \/>\nI\u2019m the poor one<br \/>\nLacking strong lungs<br \/>\nLegs that don\u2019t ache<br \/>\nWhen I pull myself<br \/>\nUp the mountain<\/p>\n<p>Where is my knowledge<br \/>\nOf using this bathroom<br \/>\nAnd sleeping on wood<br \/>\nI am poor<br \/>\nI have nothing<br \/>\nThat is useful here<br \/>\nIn this context<br \/>\nI am forced to think<br \/>\nA different way<br \/>\nFor to me they\u2019ve<br \/>\nAlways<br \/>\nBeen poor<br \/>\nBecause poor is just<br \/>\nAbout money<br \/>\nBut being here<br \/>\nMy money means<br \/>\nNothing<br \/>\nAnd poor is about lack of<br \/>\nKnowledge and<br \/>\nAbility<br \/>\nAnd language<\/p>\n<p>-Jenna Heise<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/30221674@N03\/albums\/72157690193841612\" title=\"Guatemala &amp;
