{"id":1014,"date":"2011-03-28T16:12:49","date_gmt":"2011-03-28T20:12:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crosscultural\/?p=1014"},"modified":"2011-03-29T16:12:58","modified_gmt":"2011-03-29T20:12:58","slug":"poetry-from-guatemala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/intercultural\/2011\/03\/28\/poetry-from-guatemala\/","title":{"rendered":"Poetry from Guatemala"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a class=\"tt-flickr tt-flickr-Small\" title=\"Mexico\/Guatemala 10\" href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crosscultural\/photos\/album\/72157626229246685\/mexicoguatemala-10.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0pt none\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5053\/5560363234_d882d374b0_m.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Mexico\/Guatemala 10\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am tired of not being allowed to study where I wish<br \/>\nAnd yet studying anywhere is a privilege<br \/>\nI am tired of not being able to decide what I eat<br \/>\nAnd yet having food is a privilege<br \/>\nI am tired of not being able to wash clothes, dry dishes or clean my own room<br \/>\nAnd yet many people would give a lot to have respite from these things<br \/>\nI am tired of not being able to communicate<br \/>\nAnd yet many people do not have a voice in their own country<\/p>\n<p>I am amazed at my exhaustion, frustration, and sometimes counting of weeks here<br \/>\nIt is a great privilege to be here, especially with a group and professors \u2013<br \/>\na very unique experience<br \/>\nMy host parents make sure I am well taken care of<br \/>\nand every day the beautiful view from the third and fourth floor of CASAS makes me<br \/>\npause and take notice again<br \/>\nIt is an interesting balance: knowing how to take one\u2019s feelings seriously<br \/>\nand then how to give perspective to them from a wider context \u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Rose Byler<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a class=\"tt-flickr tt-flickr tt-flickr-Small\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5026\/5559791083_8ae7122a93_m.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0pt none\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5026\/5559791083_8ae7122a93_m.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Jenn Leaman with her host family\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kaleidoscope Hope<br \/>\nColors swirl, blend, and mingle.<br \/>\nBougainvillea, bird of paradise, trajes, huipiles and dirty clothes alike.<br \/>\nThe cloth, the flowers, the eyes, and the smiles.<br \/>\nEverything Guatemala seems brighter,<br \/>\nExcept the history and perhaps the future.<br \/>\nOppression, discrimination, corruption<br \/>\nAll here too.<br \/>\nGlazed hungry eyes beg for food<br \/>\nWhile golden Quetzals sit atop a chandelier<br \/>\nAnd preachers fly in private planes.<br \/>\nWhere is justice for them, other than their own<br \/>\nDoll-like hands?<br \/>\nWhen government officials and \u201cmen of God\u201d alike<br \/>\nAre corrupted by greed and power?<br \/>\nThe poor?\u00a0 The children?<br \/>\nWhere is justice now?<br \/>\nCuidado nena, little one,<br \/>\nThis kaleidoscope of bright color quickly turns dark.<br \/>\nDon\u2019t give up hope, justice will come for you, and<br \/>\nHopefully your hungry eyes will see that day.<br \/>\nHopefully your dirty, doll-like hands will grasp tonight<br \/>\nAnd never let go.<br \/>\nHopefully brightness fills your kaleidoscope future.<br \/>\nHope.\u00a0 Fully.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;
