{"id":4228,"date":"2019-05-24T08:53:01","date_gmt":"2019-05-24T12:53:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crossroads\/?p=4228"},"modified":"2019-12-18T13:17:56","modified_gmt":"2019-12-18T18:17:56","slug":"on-a-path-of-infinite-possibilities-roberto-wingfield-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crossroads\/2019\/05\/24\/on-a-path-of-infinite-possibilities-roberto-wingfield-15\/","title":{"rendered":"On a Path of Infinite Possibilities: Roberto Wingfield &#8217;15"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4257 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2019\/05\/20190319-Roberto-Wingfield-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crossroads\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2019\/05\/20190319-Roberto-Wingfield-12.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crossroads\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2019\/05\/20190319-Roberto-Wingfield-12-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crossroads\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2019\/05\/20190319-Roberto-Wingfield-12-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crossroads\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2019\/05\/20190319-Roberto-Wingfield-12-658x439.jpg 658w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>ROBERTO WINGFIELD &#8217;15<\/strong>\u00a0first developed an interest in interdisciplinary research while at EMU, and his current position as a project coordinator at the internationally renowned Moss Rehab Research Institute in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, means he\u2019s smack in the middle of IRBs, protocols, participant samples and data collection \u2014 \u201call skills and knowledge that are applicable wherever I go next,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That will most likely be to graduate school in clinical or educational psychology; in a previous position, Wingfield was a behavioral interventionist with children on the autism spectrum.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Now, his primary assignment is administering neuropsychological assessments to patients with mild TBI, recently admitted to the emergency department. \u201cIn addition, he said, \u201cwe are investigating whether information from normal smartphone use can help better predict and understand recovery patterns following a mild brain injury, by downloading a smartphone app onto the participant&#8217;s phone which both actively and passively collects an array of data.\u201d Until that project begins, however, Wingfield has been assisting with management of a pending multi-year study funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Health to investigate factors related to treatment outcomes of African American patients over age 55 who suffered traumatic brain injury (TBI) at least five years ago.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Gaining experience in both practice and research settings has helped him narrow down future possibilities. His intellectual interests in college weren\u2019t drawn magnetically in one direction. Wingfield \u201ctook a lot of classes in whatever I was interested in\u201d and doubled down on two cross-cultural semesters in Morocco\/Spain and the Middle East with concurrent research projects in cognitive psychology and generational trauma. He graduated with a double major in history and psychology, a combination that in retrospect makes sense:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI was always interested in people, behaviors, motivations and interpersonal relationships,\u201d he said. \u201cThe historical side of that includes shifts in society, mass movements, and change on a large and small scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One \u201cmass movement\u201d the former cross country and track athlete jumped into feet first is Ultimate Frisbee. Wingfield co founded EMU\u2019s club and now plays competitively with a traveling team in Philadelphia, a part of the Philadelphia Open Program.
