I am interested in popular culture and enjoy thinking about how television, books, movies, music, technology, and other expressions of popular culture relate to an Anabaptist and biblical understanding of faith. I also enjoy sports, especially basketball, and have 12 years of coaching experience. Above all, I enjoy looking for and finding connections between my many areas of interest.
I have felt a call to teaching since my high school years, and have been exploring that call since then. In my years of teaching in a middle/high school, I realized my passion lies in working with youth and I valued the relationships I formed with students. I am at seminary in part to discern my call to and interest in PhD work, and whether to pursue teaching at the college level or return to high school teaching.
Ideal Ministry Situation
I would ideally be teaching at a Mennonite academic institution where I can use my variety of interests to benefit the school/college.
I have valued the emphasis on formation and discernment that I have felt in my time here. Even though I am pursuing a primarily academic degree, there has also been attention given to my spiritual walk. I have been challenged academically in my classes and have appreciated the helpful feedback and personalized attention from faculty. The supportive student community also stands out as a strength of the program. I’ve learned much from fellow students..
I’ve particularly enjoyed all my Greek and Hebrew courses, and am looking forward to my internship helping to teach an undergraduate course.
Advice for Prospective Students
If you have the chance to attend seminary, it is well worth the investment. EMS in particular is a place which supports your own discernment of call as well as challenging you academically. The experience has shaped me in meaningful ways as I explored my specific call to ministry.
