As the men’s golf team wraps up their tournament schedule, they continue to see positives on the golf course in only their second year of existence.
In their first tournament of the spring season, the men shaved nine strokes off their day one scorecard, posting a 349 and then a 340 to finish in eigth place. Sophomore Josh Alderfer put together a two day total of 161 (+17) to finish in 16th place out of 49 golfers.
The team then traveled to Virginia Beach to play in the Marlins Invitational where rain on the second day stifled the Royals. Once again, Alderfer led the team, finishing in eigth place and posting his second top-10 finish of the year. One golfer who was not hampered by rain was Senior John Toney who improved his score by 22 strokes to card a personal best of 83 on the second day.
“It was tough to play in the rain all day and to deal with those conditions, but I knew I needed to put up a good score and overcome it and I hit some good shots out there,” said Toney.
In their final match before the ODAC tournament, the men played 36 holes in a day due to impending rain. First-year Mark Shaner recorded the best finish of his career, landing in 17th place for the tournament in Williamsburg.
The team will finish their schedule on April 27-29 at the ODAC Championships in Conover, N.C.
