Student Blackouts Overflow Basketball Stands

Senior Stephen Quenzer, Sophomore Malachi Bontreger, First-year Viktor Kaltenstein, and Senior David Hooley stand among a multitude of fans in a basketball blackout.

Hyperactive students and stolid senior citizens load Yoder Arena for basketball games. Both basketball teams have high records of attendance for ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) games. This year EMU has averaged 672 fans per men’s game. Ahead of EMU’s men are Virginia Wesleyan College, at number one with an average of 685 fans per game, and Roanoke College, who is second with 674 fans.

The women are second among the schools in highest attendance, only trailing behind Bridgewater College’s women’s team by 61 fans per game. Throughout the past six years, EMU has ranked either number one or close to the top with high fan attendance.

EMU encourages attendance through events such as whiteouts and blackouts where students wear as much black or white as they can and sit in the student cheering section, therefore “blacking-out” or “whiting-out” the competition. These events and free tee-shirts offers to the first hundred fans that come serve as a way of encouraging people to attend the basketball games.
