A year after being bounced out of the post-season in the conference quarterfinals, the men’s basketball team is poised to make a deep run in the playoffs with an experienced team.
They will be helped by returning Senior RJ Sims who averaged 13.6 points a game last year and was an All- ODAC selection. Also returning are Juniors David Falk and Ryan Yates who both registered double digit starts last year.
“We are a team that’s got some great players returning. But we also have five freshmen and two transfers who are capable and who are going to be counted on to contribute right away for us to be successful” said Junior Nic Sulc.
The Royals finished last year with a 15-12 record (7-9 in conference), their fourth winning record in the past five seasons.
Repeating that record and making a deeper run into the post-season will not come easy for the team this year as they are slated to play nine games against teams who went to the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament last year.
Just playing well in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference will be a test as Hampden-Sydney, Randolph College, Virginia Wesleyan, and Randolph-Macon all played deep into the playoffs last year.
“It’s definitely a tough schedule for us. We have talented guys and if everyone plays up to their potential then I think we are up for the challenge” said Sulc.
The Royals start their season on Nov. 16 at Mary Washington and will play their first home game in Yoder Arena on Nov. 23 when they host Lynchburg.
