Singers go to Lancaster

Last weekend, EMU’s Chamber Singers performed in a fundraiser for Mennonite Central Committee (MCC)’s Global Family Program. Traveling to the Fulton Theatre in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the group accompanied and sang alongside six professional opera singers, including EMU alumna Madeline Bender.

Senior member of Chamber Singers James Souder commented that, “[The opera] is a cross-cultural experience. Even if you are not familiar with opera, there is a lot of just being able to appreciate the musicality and professionalism of it.”

As the last bows of the opera singers finished, the audience and Chamber Singers joined their voices in singing a the classic Mennonite hymn ‘606’ as a sign of gratitude to the opera singers for contributing their talents to the fundraiser.

According to the event’s website, the money raised in the last four years of the fundraiser, “sponsors ongoing educational programs for more than 50 children across the globe.”
