All Saints Day, 23rd Sunday after Pentecost: Week 26 in Ordinary Time

& archive, Year B.

Lord Jesus Christ,
You call us to come
To be with you,
And to learn trust, faith.
By your Spirit help me
To see you,
To hear your voice.
Help me to follow you in all of life,
To walk in the joy and freedom of the resurrection,
Indwelt and led by your Pentecost Spirit.

Amen

All Saints Day, 23rd Sunday after Pentecost: Week 26 in Ordinary Time

Bartimaeus joins the crowd as a follower of Jesus, and as this multitude makes its way up to Jerusalem from Jericho, the word spreads: “There’s the man who was blind. Jesus restored his sight. Look, he can see!”

Another word enters the space: messengers sent from Bethany by Mary and Martha, carry the news to Jesus that his friend and their brother, Lazarus, is ill. By the time Jesus arrives in Bethany, Lazarus has died, and has been buried.

We enter the narrative in John’s gospel as Mary, sister of Lazarus, hears that Jesus has arrived and runs out of the house to find him.

Be in the narrative now. Listen. Stay close.
Allow yourself to see and to feel with each of the persons here in Bethany.

Get in touch with the desire of Jesus – that his followers and all gathered here around the death of a beloved man, would be able to welcome who Jesus is and what he brings into their world: Grief and tears over death and decay, Longing for we who—like Lazarus–are caught in the web of death and sorrow to know Jesus as the life-giver; Resurrection! Victory over death!

Allow this deep and world-shaking reality to enter into you mind and soul.
Like Lazarus, listen to Jesus calling your name. What do you notice as you
are called and as you seek to walk out of the cave? What kind of “grave clothes” still seem to cling to you?

We are walking still to Jerusalem, where Jesus will offer himself for the sins of the world, where he will enter into the deep pit of death and be given the keys to set all of captivity free which has been held in the bondage of death this side of Eden. Where he will return from death, and walk among us. In Jesus, resurrection is here.

Lord Jesus Christ,
You come to us
In the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Help me to be present to you –
To be with you,
To listen –
With the ears of my heart.
Continue to free me from the many layers of death which hold this world captive.
Lead me in your Way of life.

Amen
