Sixth Sunday of Lent

& main, Year B.

Prayer before reading:

Lord Jesus Christ,
You call us to come
To be with you,
And to bear the cost
Of giving up our false self.
By your Spirit help me
To see you,
To hear you,
To follow you in all of life,
To Jerusalem and
resurrection.
Amen

Read slowly. Listen deeply. Indwell the scripture.

Season of Lent: Week Six

Our lectionary guide leads us into the last week. As we accompany Jesus and his followers over these days and nights, we are called to listen.

The prophet Isaiah joins us here, helping us pause, be still, and become attentive to God who helps us listen. Turn to Isaiah 50:4-9a and hear Isaiah’s spiritual counsel.

Morning by morning, day by day, night by night, God opens our ear – the ear of our soul. Working through the busy and pre-occupied layers of our inner chatter and scattered thoughts, God opens up the way for us to hear. Isaiah knew this kind and insistent work of God, and turned his attention to hearing what God would say, what God would give him to know. And he did not turn away.

This week, as you live into this last week before Holy Week, become aware of how God is helping you listen as you accompany Jesus over these days. You may desire to come to reading the scripture passages in the form of Lectio – guidance for which is given below. A receptive prayerful way of listening to the scripture, noticing what word of phrase or image the Spirit of God “lifts up” for you as you read. Stay with what is given you, reflect and meditate on this word, phrase, or image. Allow it to sink into deeper awareness, allow it to be present to your life, and notice how the Spirit of God gradually breaks open its deeper meaning within you.

Respond to God in prayer; be in conversation with God about what you are noticing. And then take some time to simply be with God, to rest in and with God. Take the word, phrase, or image, with you into the week – return to it among the spaces of the day or night. Live with this word God has given you. “The unfolding of your word gives life” . . . says the psalmist.

Prayer before reading:

Lord Jesus Christ,
You come to us.
Help me to see as you see,
To recognize your presence
In the desert of Lent,
And to learn God’s way.
Amen
