Seminary Fall Convocation

Michael A. King, incoming Vice President and Dean of  Eastern Mennonite Seminary, offers the address in this Fall Convocation chapel gathering.  His message is titled,  “Beauty, Eternity, Mystery, and the Reconciling Peace of Christ…Ingredients for Humble Learning” based on Ecclesiastes 3:11.

Dr. Shirley Showalter: “Thuma Mina: EMU’s Learning Community as Spirituality in Action”

Fall Faculty/Staff conference begins with words of welcome and orientation by  EMU Athletic Director, Dave King. Dr. Ken J. Nafziger leads the gathered community in a time of worship, and then Dr. Shirley Showalter offers the plenary address.

Dr. Showalter’s career has always involved teaching and Learning.  A 1970 English major graduate of EMU, she began her teaching career at Harrisonburg High School.  In 1972 she entered graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin, from which she received the Ph.D. in American Civilization in 1980.

Showalter joined the Goshen College faculty in 1976, becoming professor of English in 1989.  In April of 1996, Showalter was named the 14th president of Goshen College and served there until November 1, 2004.  During those years, she received the John. S. and James L. Knight Presidential Leadership Award among other honors.

On November 1, 2004, Showalter joined the Fetzer Institute as Vice President-Programs.  She led anotehr strategic planning process and helped the Institute organize its staff and programs around three areas: individual and community transformation, science and spirituality, and communication and outreach.

On July 18th, Showalter left the Fetzer Institute and is now fulfilling a life-long dream of becoming a full-time writer.
