Dr. J. Mark Ramseyer continues the University Colloquium Series with a talk on “Why Don’t Japanese Sue? Traffic Accidents, Universal Health Insurance and Malpractice.” Dr. Fred Kniss, provost, introduces Dr. Ramseyer, Mitsubishi Professor of Japanese Legal Studies at Harvard Law School.
The University Colloquium, an ongoing series of cross-disciplinary conversations geared to enhance intellectual community at EMU, is intended to be a conversation engaging the entire university. All faculty, staff, and students are invited.
The lectures are followed by opportunity for Q&A and informal conversation over a light reception.
EMU President Dr. Loren Swartzendruber provides a compelling call to care for Creation as people of faith, and makes the case for the University’s QEP (Quality Enhancement Program), “Peace with Creation: Environmental Sustainability from an Anabaptist Perspective.”
Between regular season play and the ODAC tournament, EMU Sports Information Director James De Boer sits with the head coaches of the EMU men’s and women’s basketball teams for an interview. Coaches Kevin Griffin and Kirby Dean reflect on the season and the tournament play beginning this week.
The Lady Royals will play Randolph-Macon Thursday, February 25 at 6:00pm, and the Nationally-ranked Men’s team will play local rival Bridgewater College on Friday, February 26 at 1:00pm.
Multicultural services leads a moving chapel for African American History Month complete with a guest appearance by Harriet Tubman, portrayed by Liz Marin. In her chapel appearance, Tubman invites us to consider other types of slavery in our society today and encourages us to seek freedom through Faith in Jesus Christ.
Ted Swartz, of Ted & Company Theaterworks, shares from his story of discerning his unique calling and Gracie Schrock-Hurst, an EMU senior, shares her strong sense of being called to the slums as part of Calling & Career Day.
Ted, an ’89 EMU grad, thought his search would lead to a pastorate. Instead, his journey led him to creating and performing dramatic plays that engage the biblical story for more than one quarter million people across the U.S. and into Canada, Kenya and Japan.
Grace, an EMU Senior Culture, Religion & Missions major has already participated in significant service experiences, one of which she describes as “surprising, humbling, challenging, enlightening, loving and beautiful.” She will share her call to serve in missions.

Michael King is the Search Committee for EMU’s next Vice President and Dean of the Seminary candidate of choice.
Professional actors Jim and Carol Anderson Shores use theatre to look at real questions of sorting out where God fits in during the midst of our struggles and the struggles of those around us. How do we minister to others in their spiritual quandaries? How do we move through our own? Come enjoy some laughter while wrestling through some of these issues with this entertaining, thought-provoking chapel.
