Byron Peachey and Deanna Durham continue the “Following Jesus with our Lives” chapel series. Byron serves as campus pastor and teaches Intro to Bible and Deanna teaches courses in the Social Work and Sociology department and Adult Degree Completion Program. They are married and are raising two sons on a farm a bit north of Harrisonburg.

The Faith of a Peacebuilder – Leymah Gbowee

Leymah Gbowee, a graduate of the MA in Conflict Studies program at EMU, speaks on how here Christian faith informs her work of peacebuilding – such as leading a group of women in a protest against the civil war in Liberia.

Leymah Gbowee has been working extensively in the field of conflict transformation and peacebuilding for over 12 years. She played a significant role in the Liberian peace process by leading the Liberian Women Mass Action Campaign from 2003-2005. She also worked as the Coordinator of the Liberian Women in Peacebuilding Network, which is part of the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding/WANEP. She graduated from the EMU Center for Justice and Peacebuilding (CJP) in 2007. Since returning to Africa, she has won numerous awards, including most recently the Gruber Prize.

Students perform the theater piece Actually, written by Brent Anders and Kelsey Landes. The service of monologues from three individuals who have been associated with sexual violence: a victim of sexual abuse as a child, a date rapist, and a witness of rape.  Take Back the Night is coordinated by students in the Social Work program.
