Seminary Spiritual Life Week speaker Mag Richer Smith grew up in Wauseon, Ohio.  She is a graduate of Goshen College and Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary.  Mag has just completed 30 years of pastoral ministry, having served congregations in Normal, Indianapolis, Lombard, IL and Iowa City.  For 27 years she has co-pastored with her husband, Bob Smith.  They have three adult children.

Laying Down Your Life – David Works

David and Marie Works suffered the ultimate loss when their two daughters were killed at the hands of a gunman in their Colorado Church parking lot in Dec. 2007.  At the time, David remembered  a training experience at EMU where he learned about the cycle of violence. He chose then not to pursue revenge for his daughters’ murders, but to work toward reconciliation and healing.

Louis Yako, EMU professor of Elementary Arabic, speaks for a true peace out of his personal experience with wars in the Middle East.  “As I share some of my personal experiences of war, I’d like to strongly make a case that, based on my real life experiences, of wars … that none of the wars we have had throughout history have succeeded to bring peace on this earth. Wars, I believe, are at best no more than temporary periods where one party gets the illusion of victory. Today, more than at any time of history, we need to reflect on what Francois Fenelon said ‘All wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers [and sisters]‘” – Louis Yako
