Once a year, Eastern Mennonite University gets all of its student-athletes together in one place. Royals Night, as it is called, was on August 31 this year, as this year’s Royals and Lady Royals got an introduction for what it means to be a student-athlete at EMU.

Eastern Mennonite University had 53 student-athletes named recently to the 2010-11 Old Dominion Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. All of the Royals’ programs compete in the ODAC except for men’s volleyball, which is not sponsored by the league.

The Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) Academic All-State Team has been released and Eastern Mennonite had six student-athletes cited. A total of 180 players from 30 colleges and universities around Virginia were honored for their academic performance this past school year.

Joining the elite Hall of Honor this fall are Ryan Brenneman – soccer, Kirsten (Brubaker) Fuhr – field hockey, and Terry Koppenhaver – soccer. The trio will be inducted Saturday at a Homecoming breakfast in Yoder Arena. And after Friday night’s home field hockey game, current Hall of Honor member Jeane’ (Horning) Hershey will have her No. 21 jersey retired.

The soccer stars of EMU, Bluffton and Goshen are gearing up for a massive double tri-match Friday through Sunday, Sept. 10-12. The games, dubbed the Menno Soccer Classic, will be hosted by Christopher Dock Mennonite High School in Lansdale, Pa.
