Three softball players named to All-State team

EMU’s softball team stuck another stamp on a historic season, putting three players on the All-State Teams, as announced today by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID).

Junior Mariah Foltz (Broadway, Va./Broadway) earned a spot on the All-State First Team, while senior Angelia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) and sophomore Carli Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) each took Second Team laurels.

Having three women honored to an all-state team ties the program high, which was also done in 2011 (Jessica Sullivan, Lisa Lee and Molly Smith). It was the first all-state award for each of this year’s Royals.

Foltz was named the top third baseman in Virginia after earning All-ODAC First Team honors earlier this spring. Along with her stellar defensive play on EMU’s left side of the infield, Foltz batted .358 with just three strikeouts in 137 at-bats. She notched career highs with 30 RBIs, 49 hits and 11 doubles, adding 26 runs scored and two homers.

Hill finished with one of the finest offensive seasons in program history, adding to her All-ODAC and All-Region Second Team laurels. She broke EMU records with 67 hits, 43 runs and 98 total bases. The catcher also had team highs with a .444 batting average and .649 slugging percentage, adding 35 RBIs, 11 doubles and six homeruns.

Miller deservedly got her first All-State award after being named All-ODAC Third Team after the season. The first baseman hit .372 with career highs of 31 runs, 42 RBIs, 48 hits, 10 doubles and a .484 on-base percentage. Miller also hit five longballs. While deadly with her bat, she was judicious with her eyes, breaking Eastern Mennonite records with 26 walks this season and 71 over her career. She duplicated the record-breaking trick with 327 putouts in 2016 and 973 in her career.

The Eastern Mennonite women finished with a record 31-14, breaking the program mark for wins. They also toppled program records with 446 hits, 295 runs, 267 RBIs, 80 RBIs and 1256 at-bats.
