International Math Contest in Modeling

February 15th, 2009 – by lb258

Six students in EMU Applied Math class participated in MCM last weekend. The contest began at 8:01pm on Thursday, February 5 and officially ended at 8:00pm on Monday, February 9. There were about 2500 teams registered to participate in the contest this year.

There are two problems available each year for the teams to choose from. 2009 MCM problem A: Designing a Traffic Circle; problem B: Energy and the Cell Phone. Both teams worked on problem B. We will get the results at the end of March. There will be about 2% Outstanding Winners, ~13% Meritorious Winners , ~29% Honorable Mentions and ~56% Successful Participants. Not every team registered could submit a complete solution because of the time limits. Both of our teams submitted their complete solutions before the deadline. I am so proud of them.

EMU has had a total of 19 teams that have participated in the MCM beginning in 1994.

Changes

January 20th, 2009 – by smeltzed

So, has anyone noticed the lack of activity on this blog over the past year? Our computer science colleague who started the blog, Yong Zhang, left us unexpectedly last summer. The rest of us are taking a while to pick up where he left off with the blog. Maybe the blog can be revived, though …

Yong’s departure meant that we needed to find instructors for some computer science classes. Thankfully, God met these needs through the willingness of some wonderful folks to help us out: Charles Cooley, who had been working half-time in our department and half-time in the office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness, came back to teach computer science full-time. Diek Wheeler (husband of EMU biology professor Greta Ann Herin) has also contributed by teaching a class each semester.
