Oops! Error on the Problem Corner

March 17th, 2009 – by byer

In the Problem corner of our Winter 2008 Integram (http://www.emu.edu/math/integram/winter2008.html), we asked readers to find a collection of 21 distinct whole numbers where the sum of the reciprocals of those numbers was 21.  We received a number of correct solutions (thank you readers!).  We (okay, I) also felt compelled to include our own solution, because [...]

We’re on youtube

March 16th, 2009 – by smeltzed

An EMU math student told me last week that she’s come to realize what a special place EMU is.  After taking a math class at another school, she realized how much she appreciates how much EMU professors care about their students.  She even said she appreciates the level of challenge she experiences in EMU math [...]

Changes

January 20th, 2009 – by smeltzed

So, has anyone noticed the lack of activity on this blog over the past year? Our computer science colleague who started the blog, Yong Zhang, left us unexpectedly last summer. The rest of us are taking a while to pick up where he left off with the blog. Maybe the blog can be revived, though [...]

Turing Test

February 1st, 2008 – by Yong Zhang

Last semester I wrote about Emacs Psychiatrist, a cute computer program that tries to have “intelligent” conversations with the user. If you talk to the program for several minutes, you quickly discover that it is not so intelligent. Can a more complicated computer program behave better? In computer science we use Turing test to test [...]

CS 101/102

January 25th, 2008 – by Yong Zhang

CS 101/102 “Introduction to Computers” is offered every semester as an introductory course to non-majors. The title of the course is kind of misleading. We will probably have the name changed to “Introduction to Computer Science” instead. Many people have flawed images for CS in their minds. In fact CS is much more exciting and [...]

January 10th, 2008 – by smeltzed

Congratulations to Dustin Good, who has been awarded the Brenneman-Longacher Endowed Mathematics Scholarship.  Dustin is a first-year student from Harrisonburg, Virginia, who is double majoring in mathematics and computer science.  As the recipient of this scholarship, Dustin will receive $1250 per year for four years (starting with the 2007-08 year).  The first two students chosen to receive [...]

EMU the bird

December 13th, 2007 – by Yong Zhang

Wondering around in Washington zoo last summer, I suddenly saw the name “EMU”. “How does EMU have anything to do with Washington zoo?” I was suprised, “Is the biology department running a joint project with the zoo?”. Looking carefully, I realized that it was EMU the bird, the largest bird native to Australia. Out of [...]

Evaluating web survey software

December 11th, 2007 – by Yong Zhang

Nathan Swatrentruber, Annette Lolchoki, and Paul Rutt did a nice little project in my software engineering class this semester. They worked on finding a solution to improve or replace the current EMU web survey software. According to EMU institutional research, the current software lacks many functionality and survey management features. The group set up a [...]
