In this week’s “Inside Athletics” podcast, James fills in for Dave and tackles postseason awards.  He talks about the most recent All-ODAC teams, as well as the nomination and voting process for regional and state awards.  He also tries to answer the question of what a Sports Information Director does during the summer, and touches on the recent ODAC SID Meeting.

Dave begins his summer series podcast by talking about the role that parents play in the sports experience of their children. Reading exerpts from letter that former professional baseball player, Mike Matheny wrote to the parents of players on the Little League team that he was coaching, Dave highlights the ways in which parents can interfere with their child’s opportunity to learn life lessons on the field. Being “silent sources of support” should be the goal, but is often very hard for many of us as parents to achieve. He challenges parents to experiment this summer by remaining silent during a game or practice and only asking if their child had fun. This is one of several different topics Dave will be addressing this summer.

In this week’s “Inside Athletics,” Dave and James talk about the whirlwind end of the regular season, which saw softball have two doubleheaders postponed and then rescheduled into the middle of finals week. They also talk about the upcoming ODAC Softball Tournament, as well as the All-ODAC Teams and possible philosophies behind voting.

A Parent’s Perspective on Collegiate Athletics–

This week’s special guest is Jim Smucker, a businessman from Pennsylvania who is spending this semester at EMU teaching and doing research for the business department. Jim has three children who are, or planning to play collegiate sports. His son Jordy is a Division I baseball player and Jim shares about his experiences in the recruiting process and making a college choice. As a former coach at a variety of levels, Jim reflects on the differences between the perspective of a coach and that of a parent. He also talks about the value of the athletic experience in preparing students for the workplace and the qualities he looks for in hiring employees. Jim provides a very balanced approach to athletics based on his personal experiences.
