Facility upgrades and energy consumption
Facilities Management staff work hand-in-hand with Blue Ridge Architects and local alumni-related building companies on facility upgrades and new projects. EMU has been a pioneer in constructing energy-efficient buildings and installing innovative heating and cooling systems since the 1980s.
The newest green dorm, Cedarwood, set college precedent in 2011 when it received LEED “gold” certification, one of the highest environmental standards construction can attain, by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED-certified renovations to other residence halls were completed in 2011 and 2012. Currently an addition and renovation of EMU’s Suter Science Center is underway and LEED certification is expected.
Despite the renovations and additional building, EMU’s energy consumption has lowered. When checked in 2012, EMU was using almost half the amount of energy as most other institutions its size.
