Capstone Presentation: "Engaging a Self-Proclaimed 'Lazy' Community: Organizing Immigrants in South
When Tuesday April 23, 2013 @ 12:00 PM (455 days ago)
Where Dining Hall, West dining room
Duration 1 hour
CJP student Erika Bollman spent three months working at New Sanctuary Movement (NSM) of Philadelphia, an interfaith coalition of immigrant and allied congregations working to give voice to immigration injustices and enact just and humane immigration reform. She primarily spent her time meeting with members of Philadelphia’s Indonesian immigrant community one on one and working to engage them in NSM’s campaign for immigration reform. Erika will reflect on the lessons learned as a community organizer living and working among a population not traditionally motivated to be politically active. She will also present insights on the implications and effectiveness of NSM’s chosen role in the larger social movement for comprehensive immigration reform.
This event is free and open to the public. Hot drinks and snacks will be served.
