Summer Cross-cultural Program

Harlem, NYC

Cross-cultural seminar: Summer 2007

T he focus of this cross-cultural seminar will be the African-American experience in Harlem, New York City, including past and present cultural movements such as the Harlem Renaissance and the present Revival.   Students will live with members of the Seventh Avenue Mennonite Church while visiting the Apollo Theater, the Schomberg Center, the Studio Museum of Harlem, the Sugar Hill Bistro and other culturally significant landmarks. Students will study issues of race and diversity while living in Harlem and exploring a variety of other famous neighborhoods of New York; Riverside Drive and its church, Covenant Avenue, Morningside Drive, Esplanade Gardens, 125th Street, the Polo Grounds and Dunbar Houses.  

Students will also be exposed to the socio-economic issues that exist in a city as big and as famous as New York
