Christy Norment

POSITION: Adjunct Faculty

DEPARTMENT: School of Social Sciences and Professions

Christy Norment has been teaching Restorative Justice in Education and Circle Processes to educators and students for four years. She holds a graduate certificate in Restorative Justice in Education from EMU and a masters degree in School Counseling from JMU. She has been a school counselor at Harrisonburg High School since 2014. Prior to graduate school, Norment was a first grade teacher in Harrisonburg City Public Schools and taught English as a Foreign Language in Seoul, South Korea. Before teaching, she worked in family homeless shelters, including Mercy House in Harrisonburg, as the Child Service Coordinator. 

During her time as a high school counselor, Norment has been active in the Harrisonburg Restorative Justice Coalition’s Education Subcommittee. She has worked with student leaders to help students gain knowledge about Restorative Justice that they can share with their peers. Norment engages in mediation, circle facilitation, and restorative conferences as a school counselor at HHS. She has presented on topics such as mediation, circle processes, and restorative justice in education at professional conferences such as the Virginia School Counselor Association, Virginia Counselor Association, IU13 Education Conference, JMU’s Summer Counseling Institute, and Harrisonburg City Public School’s professional development programs.
